I’m a fake critic.
Third party claims. And by third parties, I mean friends. And by fake critic, I mean they claim I love everything I eat.
Until tonight.
Tonight, I “finally” experienced disappointment.
Sushi Inn. Yorkville.
Yes, deliberate insertion. Who assumed it would be fantastic (or at least half-decent) merely based on location? I DID. Shame on me. Wrong assumption. It was bad. So bad, didn’t even want to take pictures. I know. Serious, right?
It pains (not this time), but forgettable:
Yam Tempura, Spicy salmon maki, Spicy tuna maki, Dragon B (aka Red Dragon)
Q: When does locale compensate for poor quality? It doesn’t. To describe in one: sloppy. Rolls so loose, they don’t stand a chance with your chopsticks. Rolls that just fall apart. Rolls so lacking in presentation. Teeny, tiny rolls. Yep, even the Dragon B…all smoke, no fire. Bits of shrimp tempura, avocado, salmon, tobiko…naked & exposed for the world to see… or rather, our judging eyes.
Did they run out of sushi rice? Did they try a new rice vinegar? Did they bypass the fresh fish market? Did they hire a new sushi chef apprentice? Sigh. Endless questions.
And the best part… IT WAS PACKED!!
No words.
[Sidebar]: T & I were particularly distracted by the couple sitting next to us, who appeared to be on their – hmm, wild guess – 2nd date, eating quite possibly the s-l-o-w-e-s-t meal of all time. One udon noodle at a time. Agonizing. Yet, bizarrely fascinating.
Ok, meanie rant is over. Starved. Need a midnight snack.
How’s that for a scathing review? I feel dirty.

Hey Kim….
Redeem your love for sushi.
MJ and I are huge fans of this place on bloor towards our place. It is called Momiji.
Lovely, fresh and different sushi. You’ll more than make up for the poor experience in Yorkville.
Love’n the blog as always.
Keep up the good work

Tainted experience, but could easily be won over again… with Momiji!
Just checked out their menu – looks amazing. So many different options: spicy chess roll, bay roll, momiji roll…have you tried any of them?
May need to make a trip to visit you two ;)

Hey Kim!
I agree with you about this one. As I used to work just up the corner, I’ve been there more than a few times, sad I know.
But I think why it is always packed is because the “selection” they have on their menu, different combo A’s, B’s, C’s etc and because for a Yorkville restaurant, they’re not that expensive oh and because it is in Yorkville.
Have you tried Shogun? It’s just down the street beside Tony Belloni’s. This was also a frequent spot for me and my co-workers. They have good sushi there, not bad, but more expensive too.
Ok that is all :)
OHH If you are ever in the Sauga area, there is a really good sushi place by Mo’s house – Hinote, the best spicy salmon I have had.
Ok :)
I hear you…good price, good location… but, even SO! Wanted to shake every single person in there & say “what are you doing?! put those chopsticks down. now.”
Yes, tried Shogun a few wks ago (after your suggestion!), and loved the brown rice substitution, but other than that… not so memorable for me. Bad night perhaps?
K.
Wow! How long have you been food-blogging? I love your approach as well as learning about local haunts, will be adding you to my blogroll! :-)

Thanks Romi:) Since Jan – New year’s resolution to eat, write, eat, eat, eat, write… and so the pattern goes…
Sushi Inn used to be great value, but that was almost 8 years ago when I first tried this spot.
It’s been all downhill since.
Btw, just discovered your blog and glad I did. Keep it up Kim.
