Is this not the most beautiful dish you’ve ever laid eyes on?
Reinstating slight obsession for Susur’s singaporean slaw. 19 elusive ingredients… from daikon sprouts, fennel, julienned jicama, cucumber, carrots to taro root, edible flower petals, toasted sesame seeds… it’s visually spectacular & indescribable. Yes, even carrots become exotic. If you’ve had it, please chime in with wildly descriptive love notes. If you haven’t, will incoherently rave for a few min & then force you to be next dinner date.
One ambitious day, L & I will attempt. For fun. Can you imagine?! Will need hours, a mandolin (or two) and lots of good humour.
Until that day, if I suggest Lee or Lee Lounge for dinner… say yes to the slaw.
I tried it last week on a date, and I was the one who suggested having it because a friend suggested it. Good thing is my date loved it. I was a bit reticent about the melange of flavours. It was definitely great on texture and amazing use of visuals, but I kept getting a distinct flavour of ginger. And ginger. And also, ginger. I did enjoy the toasted sesame seeds, and occasionally the sweet bite of the jicama, but I’m going to skip it next time.
Also, it might have been that the two of us shared it, and quite honestly it’s a lot of food for two people.
My apologies if I’m the only one who’s rocking this opinion. I have sadly not reported back to my friend who suggested it for fear of incredulous showering of judgement on my palette which I assure you is eclectic yet refined….m’yes….yes.
